So Purim is around the corner and I have been trying out different recipes for Oznei Haman for 4 years, this will be my 5th try. This recipe is mostly my mother in law's with a couple tweakings of my own. You can fill them with prunes, jams, chocolate or my husband's favorite, poppy seeds. This is what you'll need:
Original recipe:
200g of margarine/Crisco
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
2 egg yolks
1/4 cup cold water
about 1 1/2 cups flour, can go up to 2
I added:
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp grated orange zest
Mix everything but the flour together with a spoon or by hand then slowly add the flour, you need to keep adding it till all is absorbed and the dough doesn't stick to your hands anymore but isn't too stiff either. Cut into 4, flour your board and roll out to about 1/4 inch thick, cut rounds out with a glass (I used a tea glass and got 57 cookies, you can use a larger drinking glass and you'll get a little over 2 dzs.), fill in about 1/2 tsp or less of filling, then pinch 3 sides together to form a triangle (the filling will come out the middle and that is ok). Bake at a preheated 350F oven till they start to brown lightly, or about 20 to 25 minutes. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top when cooled if you like and enjoy!
